{"id":4289,"date":"2017-03-10T08:08:28","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T16:08:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.touchalifekids.org\/?p=4289"},"modified":"2017-03-10T08:08:28","modified_gmt":"2017-03-10T16:08:28","slug":"sharing-culture-through-archaeology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/touchalifekids.org\/sharing-culture-through-archaeology\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharing Culture through Archaeology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Leah McCurdy heard that her mother would be visiting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.touchalifekids.org\/carecenter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Touch A Life Care Center<\/a> in Ghana for the second time, she had an idea. As an archaeologist and lecturer\u00a0at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uta.edu\/uta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Texas at Arlington<\/a>, Leah is interested in educating and benefitting\u00a0the communities around archeological places, so her natural inclination was to provide a learning experience for the Touch A Life kids to learn about West African heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Over a\u00a0year ago, Leah and several other archeologists began the <a href=\"https:\/\/fajinaoutreach.org\/2015\/10\/15\/ghana-touch-a-life-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fajina Archeology Outreach<\/a>. Leah explained, &#8220;<em>Fajina<\/em> is a modern Maya word\u00a0that means communal labor. Members of a community give their time for the good of the community to make sure that everyone can benefit from working together.&#8221; While their primary work began in Belize near an archaeological site, Leah\u00a0was happy to expand the program to Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>While at the Care Center, Leah&#8217;s mom, Sally, showed a video of Leah and her colleagues explaining the project and the Touch A Life kids were able to work on a coloring and letter writing project. The project\u00a0included information about traditional West African dolls, fabric, colors, and symbols. The letters that the kids wrote will be delivered to children in Belize to share cultural knowledge.\u00a0Leah&#8217;s video also shared about an archaeological site that is near the Care Center in Kumasi.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.touchalifekids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/20170122_150415.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4292\" src=\"https:\/\/www.touchalifekids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/20170122_150415-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"20170122_150415\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.touchalifekids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Ghana-2017-476.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4291\" src=\"https:\/\/www.touchalifekids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Ghana-2017-476-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ghana 2017 476\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.touchalifekids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Ghana-2017-481.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.touchalifekids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Ghana-2017-481-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ghana 2017 481\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Touch A Life kids\u00a0can&#8217;t wait to hear back from their new friends in Belize and learn all about the culture and heritage in Central America!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7ese2ZBpAmI\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/7ese2ZBpAmI<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Leah McCurdy heard that her mother would be visiting the Touch A Life Care Center in Ghana for the second time, she had an idea.
